And from an actor's point of view, if you try to control that too much, I think it stifles impulse. What it means for an audience will be many different things. Characters are real through actions, and you've got to be there and have things happen to you and try to make things happen. There are lots of moments in the film where a viewer might wonder if it's real, a nightmare, madness or what? I wonder if you had to know to play your character.ĭAFOE: Not really. And then you take food away from them, and then you start to drink.
And you see all the strategies that people take when they're kind of stripped of a future and they're challenged by each other and things don't go so well. What happens, I mean, without giving too much away, they don't get relieved.ĭAFOE: So basically, they're stuck with each other. But it's like a marriage with nothing going for it.ĭAFOE: There's something (laughter). We'll get to that.ĭAFOE: (Laughter) OK, I was about to chime in. So these two lighthouse keepers are brought together for four weeks of rotten weather and, with regard to your character, not very bracing food. It's just if my life would've taken a different path at a different time. Basically, the idea that's inside us are all characters. SIMON: You told Esquire, Thomas Wake is me if I was Thomas Wake.ĭAFOE: That's a little double talk.
But this plays a central role in getting to know your character. He's bewhiskered, cranky and, if I may, flatulent. SIMON: Thomas Wake, the senior lighthouse keeper - you play him. And I knew he would do it with this juicy lighthouse location. The thing that I responded to so much in "The Witch" was his ability to not only capture a period film without pointing at it, without overstating it, but also, he creates a world that's so complete. I mean, listen I saw Robert Eggers' first film "The Witch," and wow. (Laughter) Why make this film on a cold spit of land in Nova Scotia?ĭAFOE: Oh, God, that's part of the pleasure. SIMON: At this point in your career, you could probably do a James Bond film in Monaco. Willem Dafoe joins us now from the studios of NPR West.
